The Cottage Hospital

In Bloomsbury Place, a cottage hospital was built at The Grove in 1880, in memory of the late Thomas Wilson Esq., but after an existence of ten years, was closed and converted onto a private dwelling. Near it was Wilson Memorial Reference Library. Dr Wilson was Pocklington’s doctor for over 40 years and so fondly remembered by the town that a fund was created which built the hospital, the library and the pulpit in the church was replaced as a memorial to him. The name Bloomsbury came from the name of the horse which won the Derby and was ridden by local jockey Simeon Templeman, who named the property he owned after winning the horse.
