Market Street

Visible is the Post Office and the painted sign on the shop wall which has been visible until very recently. It was an advertisement for Rowley’s Ladies and Gents Outfitters which also operated a clothing factory in the town in London Street. The houses of Brass Castle Hill are visible. The origin of the name ‘Brass Castle’ has often been speculated about. One possible explanation is the Post Office was built on the site of an ancient Mill which has operated there since the time of the Doomsday Book. The house at the side was the Millers House, one of the wealthiest men in the town, and Brass being an old word for money. Other examples exist of Millers houses being called Brass Castles.
