Driving the sheep to market

Pocklington Cattle and Sheep market closed in the 1960’s and was located in New Street. It was visible on the 1891 OS map of Pocklington but not on the earlier 1855 OS map or the Watson maps. Also visible is an early gas lamp. In 1834 street lamps were converted to Gas and a Gasworks was built in London Street at a cost of £1,666. The New Gas Company Limited was formed in 1886, with a capital of £8,000, in £10 shares, purchased the rights of the existing gas company. New works were erected near the railway station with one larger gasholder, with a capacity of 30,000 cubic feet, which supplied the town, Barmby Moor and Allerthorpe. In 1892 Pocklington was lit by 80 lamps and the gas retailed at 4s.2d. per 1,000 cubic feet.
