Market Street with the war memorial

The Cooperative store in Pocklington became very popular. Formed in 1904, the Cooperative soon blossomed and flourished in the town selling groceries; flour; drapery; boots and shoes; furnishings; and tailoring. The store had 140 members. By 1922 Bishop Wilton, Bugthorpe, Melbourne and Stamford Bridge had their own Co-ops. In 1928, a bakery, grocery warehouse and a coal depot were added.
